Memoir by Stansberry of the Garrison family of Buncombe County, N.C., who settled there in the mid-eighteenth century when the area was embraced in Rowan County, accounts for the family, generation by generation from 1764 to 1892 and furnishes brief biographical, social, and cultural information, especially for the latter half of the nineteenth century, and demonstrates movements of the family within Buncombe County until 1837 and records the dispersal of a North Carolina mountain family into Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Missouri, Iowa Territory, Kansas, Illinois, Arkansas, and Arizona Territory. Manuscript includes a short autobiography of Stansberry covering the period from his departure in 1837 from Buncombe County, N.C., to Missouri, and to the end of his term as probate judge for Butler County, Kan., in 1892 and giving brief details of his life as a mill owner, lawyer, minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, sometime U.S. marshal, and secret service agent in Missouri for the Confederate States Army in 1862 until his arrest.
